Lunigiana
The Lunigiana is well situated in Italy and Tuscany. The classic city of Pontremoli is in the north, the beautiful town of Sarzana in the south. The old borgos are cultural heritage and are cared for and treated as they deserve by the inhabitants. The borgos of Montereggio, Castiglione del Terziere, Malgrate, Filattiera, Bagnone, Filetto (most from Byzantine origin), Tresana, Lusuolo, Caprigliola and Fosdinovo are still very authentic and beautyful. A special event is driving from Aulla to Lucca through the Garfagnana region. The station in Pontremoli, (trains) is the stop for Parma, La Spezia and Pisa.

Culture is all around, like the 4000 year old prehistoric steles (menhirs), even outside the museums. Florence is only an eighty minutes drive by car. The region has many highlights and the coast is only a twenty minutes drive. Portovenere and the five fishing villages which seem glued to the rocks, named CinqueTerre (Unesco World Heritage) are some of the highlights. The beaches of Forte dei Marmi and Carrara, the marble capital of the world, some others. A real canyon (Gordana) and Lake Lagastrello, make ideal picnic spots.

In winter there are slopes at Zum Zeri, 25 Km east of Pontremoli and in Cerreto in the south-east. Both are nice family ski resorts and also worth a summer visit. The Apuanian Alps, where Michelangelo got the marble for his David, the thermal baths of Equi and the
Grotta del Vento
(cave of the wind), are other tourist attractions. Here's a map of the Lunigiana and here are some distances.
